Wii homebrew – Leveltool v0.3

Leveltool - Image 1Just when you thought you’ve seen it all. Wii brew developer Alanceil was missing his level tool at home, so he whipped up this brew to replace it. Talk about resourcefulness. So if by some chance you’d like to put a little more gaming into your domestic projects, here’s the homebrew for you!

Here’s how it works. Just put the Wiimote on top of a surface that you’d like to use as a reference, preferably the most level surface you can find, then press A. This will start the calibration. After that, you can put your Wiimote on other surfaces and see the difference in inclination.

Here’s the changelog:

  • Fix: Leftover cursor pixel from previous tests removed
  • Chg: Measuring is done in degrees
  • Chg: Verbosity of calibration screen decreased
  • Add: Detection if Wiimote #1 is up and running
  • Add: Pictures
  • Add: Calibration for maximum value on the wiimote when standing upright.

Actually, this is fun even if you have no real use for it. Just for fun, see if your house is tilting onto its side or something. Or is that just me being my juvenile self again? Try it.

Activison Expects Games to Dominate Entertainment in 09

ActivisionRecession? What recession? As bizarre as it sounds these days, that seems to be Activision’s view when it comes to the gaming industry in 2009. Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show, Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith said videogames is the only major entertainment industry where consumer interest is still growing, and therefore will emerge the dominant business in 2009.

“Movies, recorded music and television -? these are all stagnating or contracting entertainment sectors,” he said. “Video games are poised to eclipse all other forms of entertainment in the year ahead.”

But it wasn’t just baseless speculation — Griffith brought some hard figures to back up his claim. He noted that between 2003 and 2007, videogame sales went up 40 percent in the U.S. During the same years, movie ticket sales have dropped 6 percent, music sales dropped 12 percent, and the amount of hours consumers spent watching television fell as well.

Next Street Fighter Club Coming To San Francisco January 16

Capcom has been pretty quiet about its Street Fighter Club events until now. But with Street Fighter 4 only a month away, it looks like they’ve gone a bit more public.

The next Street Fighter Club is being advertising over on Capcom-Unity for Friday, January 16 between 8 pm and 12 am. Only fans eighteen and over are eligible to attend (the kids need their sleep, you know), and the event is invitation only.

So if you’re in San Francisco, you’re probably wondering, “So if it’s invite only, how do I get an invite?” Just send a message with your real name to the email address listed on the site, and it sounds like you’re in for a night of Street Fighter 4 goodness. And if you do get in, feel free to post here. We’d love to know how it went.

SOE Expects PS3 to Drive Half Its Business

DC Universe Online

Sony Online Entertainment has a couple of big new projects underway — namely Free Realms and DC Universe Online — and it looks like if things go as planned, the PlayStation 3 will factor into both of them in a significant way. In an interview with GameDaily at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, SOE president John Smedley said they expect the PS3 to make up “close to half our business” going forward.

“There’s an audience now waiting for online games on the PS3,” Smedley explained. “I believe PSN has over 15 million users today. It’s growing so quickly, we see a great user base potential there.”

Smedley went on to elaborate on the dynamics of the PS3 audience, and how they could affect the business of MMOs. “I think a lot of the people who play PS3 games right now aren’t the same people playing MMOs right now,” he said. “I think it’s going to bring in a lot of new players. There are certainly people who have consoles and PCs in their house. The difference is what they actively play. PS3 gamers are used to playing Resistance 2 instead of a shooter on the PC. I think we can bring this kind of gaming to this audience and I think it’s going to be huge.”

Microsoft "Absolutely" Wouldn’t Want to Swap Positions With Sony

Xbox 360Following Sony’s not-so-veiled shot at Microsoft (and Nintendo) with its price comparison chart last week, Microsoft has responded with a fairly cool-headed response. Speaking at CES, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 group product manager, Aaron Greenberg, took a less offensive approach by saying, “I would rather talk about why you should buy our console than why you shouldn’t buy the competitor’s system.”

Sony believes — or at least wants prospective consumers to believe — that Microsoft is “peddling add-ons,” but Greenberg thinks that having the lowest price on the market for a current-gen console was a big win for the 360.

“I would say we absolutely would not want to trade places with Sony,” he told Kotaku. “We feel like being half the price of the PS3 served us quite well this holiday.”

Joystiq hands-on: Dawn of War 2

9a3b9 handondawnii Joystiq hands on: Dawn of War 2

We learned a valuable lesson at CES last week: Don’t demo an RTS game on a trade show floor. Why? Because it’s nigh-impossible to hear a developer’s instructions over the deafening noise of geek-outs. It turns into something like this dialogue snippet from our hands-on experience with Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War 2:

Relic:
“So, you’ll quickly want to set a rally point here.” *taps screen*
Joystiq: *clicks on random units* [units march off-screen]
Relic: “Okay, so if you look at this icon, you’ll see that your character is earning zeal. You might want to build some heavy firepower units for support.”
Joystiq: *attacks enemy power generator* [cue: bad move!]

It was just too darn loud at CES to get good instructions, and Relic only had one demo station on hand, which obviously did not feature any PVP gameplay. Naturally, we had StarCraft 2 in mind as we fooled around with Dawn of War 2, measuring Relic’s RTS against what we’ve played of Blizzard’s next blockbuster. We can say that Dawn of War 2 is currently winning in the looks department. As we watched an Imperial Tank literally roll through walls and crush them into powder while Space Marines jumped over the action with jetpacks, we were remiss to have left our drool bib back home in the hamper.

We’ve embedded a pair of videos from our session after the break, including producer Mark Noseworthy blowing stuff up!

Tomb Raider Underworld DLC Coming January 21

Tomb Raider Underworld

Tomb Raider Underworld’s long-awaited and delayed downloadable content appears to have a solid release date of January 21, reports Joystiq. The article points to GameStop listing the “Tomb Raider Underworld Expansion Token Pack” for $19.99, which includes two Xbox Live cards. The price and presence of two cards leads to speculation that Eidos has dropped its plans for two separate DLC packs and combined them into one. If that’s the case, purchasing the combined pack over Xbox Live would probably cost 1600 MS Points, or $20 USD. Of course, the GameStop listing could be bundling the packs together, and Eidos could still plan to sell them separately for 800 MS Points ($10) each.

Even before its delays, the DLC for Underworld has been causing confusion. The 360-exclusive DLC was rumored to be timed with a PS3 and PC version launching later, which Eidos later denied. We’ll let you know when Eidos drops official details on the content coming on January 21, and whether it includes both of the previously planned DLC packs.

CES 2009: Mgestyk hoping you’ll chuck your controller

We’d like to fault Mgestyk for their painfully edgy misspelling of a well-known actual word, but as a bunch of guys who spell Joystick with a “q”, we’re cautious about getting into a pot-kettle situation. Instead we’ll talk about Mgestyk, a hands-free controller (or, more accurately, a controller-free controller) that we spotted on the CES show floor.

With Mgestyk, a specially-designed camera tracks the player’s movements with surprising accuracy, and without the perfect lighting required by an EyeToy or Xbox Vision camera (in fact, we’re told the camera can work in complete darkness). Also unlike the other cam controllers, Mgestyk has the ability to detect depth.

The possibilities are intriguing, but, as you can see in the video above, the technology isn’t perfect yet (lag, it would seem, continues to be an issue). We’re rooting for our Brothers in Misspelling, but we’re not sure we’re looking at a Wii-killer just yet.
