Activison Expects Games to Dominate Entertainment in 09
Recession? What recession? As bizarre as it sounds these days, that seems to be Activision’s view when it comes to the gaming industry in 2009. Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show, Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith said videogames is the only major entertainment industry where consumer interest is still growing, and therefore will emerge the dominant business in 2009.
“Movies, recorded music and television -? these are all stagnating or contracting entertainment sectors,” he said. “Video games are poised to eclipse all other forms of entertainment in the year ahead.”
But it wasn’t just baseless speculation — Griffith brought some hard figures to back up his claim. He noted that between 2003 and 2007, videogame sales went up 40 percent in the U.S. During the same years, movie ticket sales have dropped 6 percent, music sales dropped 12 percent, and the amount of hours consumers spent watching television fell as well.
