Cars: The Game For The Nintendo Wii Console
Film licenses are typically rife with material for home console video games, and this is especially so for children’s films. Cars is yet another movie title which falls into that same genre. Pixar’s well-received animated film about Lightning McQueen has been produced in almost every gaming format and has inevitably come to Nintendo’s Wii console as well. Studios see dollar signs around popular children’s movies, so in this case, they built a racing game around the movie. You now have the premise for Cars the game on the Wii console.
The story is directly borrowed from the film, and focuses on the up-and-coming stock car racer, Lightning McQueen. Lightning has an egocentric, as well as a naïve personality, and ends up steering himself into a bit of trouble in the small town of Radiator Springs. The Cars video game starts up right after the movie’s plotline, and all the principal characters of the movie are included in the game. There’s no doubt that younger players who enjoyed the movie will warm to the new lines and antics from Mater the tow truck, Lightning McQueen and Chick Hicks, Lightning’s rival.
Of course, what drives the plot of this game is racing, and familiarizing yourself with the game’s mechanics shouldn’t take the average gamer too long. Driving is done from an easy-to-see angle, and the action is never very difficult to follow. The Wii game controller acts as a steering wheel so that gamers can hold it sideways with the D pad or directional pad under their left thumb. The gas, brakes and speed-booster buttons finish out the controls, while the Wii controller has a motion-sensitive tilt action which steers the car. Steering is fairly easy to master and even an inexperienced gamer should be cruising along with little to no trouble in a short amount of time.
Additionally, players are able to modify some of Lightning McQueen’s features, like rims, wheels, side skirt, hood, rear bumper, spoiler and paint color with special customization features. This allows you to give Lightning a personalized touch, style and look like he’s never had before. Cars the game also features multiplayer mini-games based on Pixar’s Cars Toons, a series of animated short cartoons that are aired on the Disney Channel.
In Cars the game for Wii, there are one-liners and mild taunting scattered throughout the action, but it’s not harsh enough to give it an elevated rating. Cars for the Wii is given an “E” rating by the ESRB. Go online and read some Cars the video game reviews so you will know this is a family-friendly game. Cars for the Wii may be a bit slower than most racing games, but still provides a nice challenge for your young gamer.
