The Mac Computer as a Gaming Platform

Video games for the Mac are becoming more common in the marketplace. The Mac offers an amazingly diverse and vibrant gaming experience, including action, adventure, role-playing, sports, kid’s games and just about any other game genre you’d be interested in. The newest Macintosh models also feature an application which is easy to install and lets users play Windows games on their Mac. Earlier Macintosh versions weren’t as friendly to gaming, but the current models have made the porting of many games easier. And whether it’s running the Mac OS or a system that runs Windows, a Mac will give you performance that is roughly equal to that of a Windows PC that has about the same equipment.

When it comes to creating video games for the Macintosh, the ideal situation is for them to be developed at the same time as the Windows version of the games. This may be the ideal situation, but it rarely happens. Only a few companies develop games simultaneously for Mac and Windows computers.

Typically, the high-end games that come to the Macintosh actually were originally developed for Microsoft Windows. After a while they are ported over to the Mac system by one of the fairly small number of porting house companies. Two early video games, Microsoft Flight Simulator and SimCity, were converted to Mac in 1986 and 1988. One well-known exception to the rule was Myst, from 1993, which was first developed on the Macintosh and then imported to Windows a year later.

Because most Mac games are not developed at the same time as the version for Windows, the Macintosh rollout tends to lag behind the Windows version of the game, typically by several months. That’s how it usually happens with most high-end games that require an extensive amount of time to play and feature great graphics. But many companies now create original Mac video games that are of a more casual type. These games, which incude some downloadable mini games, have basic graphics and are easily played in short periods of time. Various categories of these games are available, including puzzle games, arcade games, hidden object games for mac, jigsaw games and others.

The fact that there is not enough shelf space for most brick and mortar stores to carry a full line of Mac video games is one thing to think about when you are looking for games for the Macintosh. As Mac has such a small market share it just doesn’t make sense to stock up on Mac games. It is easy, however, to do a Google search for Mac games-related websites.

Mac users have another choice – to play PC games using a Windows-based operating system on their Macintosh. This can be done is several different ways. Since Intel processors began being used in Mac computers, users have been able to run the Macintosh operating system at the same time they are running Windows and without needing to reboot their computer. Several free applications that allow users to do this are available online.

Whether you are playing a video game through the Windows operating system or you are playing a game that’s exclusive to the Mac on the OS, the Macintosh experience is every bit as rich and compelling as on any PC.
